Therapy at home

At-home physical, occupational and speech therapy

Licensed therapists come to your home to help you walk safely, handle daily tasks and communicate again — working with the stairs, bathroom and kitchen you actually use.

Therapies we provide at home

At-home physical therapy

Physical therapists help you move with more strength and confidence after surgery, a fall, a stroke or a hospital stay. Therapy at home focuses on the movements you need in your own space.

  • Walking safely, with or without a walker or cane
  • Balance training to lower your risk of falling
  • Getting in and out of bed, chairs and the car
  • Managing the stairs and steps in your home
  • A home exercise program you can keep doing between visits

Occupational therapy at home

Occupational therapists help you get back to the everyday tasks that matter to you, and make your home work for you while you recover.

  • Bathing, dressing and grooming with less strain
  • Preparing simple meals and moving around the kitchen
  • Saving energy during daily routines
  • Recommendations for equipment such as shower chairs or grab bars
  • Setting up rooms to reduce trip and fall hazards

Speech therapy at home for adults

Speech-language pathologists work with adults whose speech, language, thinking or swallowing has changed — often after a stroke or another serious illness.

  • Speaking clearly and finding words
  • Understanding, reading and writing
  • Memory, attention and problem-solving strategies
  • Swallowing safely, with exercises and diet guidance

Why at home

Why therapy at home works for homebound patients

Your real environment

You practice on your own stairs, in your own bathroom and kitchen — the places where falls and struggles happen.

No trips to a clinic

When leaving home takes a considerable and taxing effort, therapy comes to you instead.

Family can learn too

Caregivers can watch and learn the exercises and safety techniques during visits.

Coverage

Does Medicare cover physical therapy at home?

Yes. Physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology are covered services under Medicare’s home health benefit, and eligible patients pay $0 for covered home health services.

To qualify, you must be homebound, a doctor or allowed practitioner must see you in person and order home health, and the care must come from a Medicare-certified agency. Medicare counts physical therapy and speech-language pathology as qualifying skilled needs; a continuing need for occupational therapy can also keep you eligible.

FAQ

At-home therapy: questions, answered

Can a physical therapist come to your home?

Yes. A home health physical therapist visits you at home and works on strength, balance, walking and safety in your own rooms. Rinaldi Home Health Care provides at-home physical therapy across Los Angeles County and Southern California.

Does Medicare cover physical therapy at home?

Yes, through the home health benefit. Original Medicare covers physical therapy at home when you are homebound, a doctor or allowed practitioner orders it after seeing you in person, and a Medicare-certified agency provides it. You pay $0 for covered home health services.

What is the difference between physical therapy and occupational therapy?

Physical therapy focuses on how you move — strength, balance, walking and stairs. Occupational therapy focuses on everyday tasks — bathing, dressing, grooming and preparing meals — and on making your home safer for those tasks.

Does insurance pay for physical therapy at home?

Original Medicare does for eligible patients, through the home health benefit. Private and commercial plans vary. Rinaldi accepts Original Medicare and private and commercial insurance — call (818) 898-1100 to check your plan.

What does a speech therapist do for adults at home?

A speech-language pathologist helps adults with speaking, understanding language, memory and thinking skills, and swallowing safely — often after a stroke or another serious illness — using exercises and strategies you can practice at home.

How long does at-home therapy last?

It depends on your goals and your doctor’s plan of care. Under Medicare, if you still need care, your plan of care is recertified at least every 60 days, and there is no fixed limit on the number of recertifications while you remain eligible.
